Today, April 22 we celebrate Earth Day. Earth Day remembers that in April 22, 1970, millions of people took to the streets to protest the negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development. Smog was becoming deadly and evidence was growing that pollution led to developmental delays in children. Biodiversity was in decline as a result of the heavy use of pesticides and other pollutants. Ecological awareness was starting to grow, and the US Congress and President Nixon responded quickly. In July of the same year, they created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Also, they enforced environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act, among many.

Here at Local Guest we decided to celebrate Earth Day by reviewing what are the best practices to protect Earth. We also decided to discuss what are carbon offsets and what we are doing in Local Guest, to make the Earth we live better.

Earth Day - Local Guest

What are Carbon Offsets?

A carbon offset is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. There are many ways on which we can reduce the emissions of carbon dioxides and the carbon footprint.

What is a Carbon Footprint?

Carbon Footprint refers to the carbon emissions produced by a single person on their activities. For example, when you drive a car, the engine burns fuel which creates a certain amount of CO2. Depending on its fuel consumption and the driving distance, you are generating an amount of emissions which are part of your Carbon Footprint.

By doing small differences, you can reduce your Carbon Footprint and definitely, generate new Carbon Offsets. At Local Guest, we are always supporting initiatives that reduce the carbon emissions we are producing.

What are we doing in Local Guest to minimize Carbon Footprint and make Earth better?

Reusable water bottles and eco friendly cutlery in all of our experiences.

We believe that we need to set the example in order to make the world better. At Local Guest, we take different measures in order to reduce our carbon footprint. Community based tourism is one of the starting points to reduce our carbon footprint and make the world a better place.

At Local Guest, we are truly conscious of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.  We are always trying to make our experiences in order to follow these goals. We help communities to empower themselves always conscious of the impact that their different initiatives could make to the environment. In all Local Guest experiences, we give our guests refillable water bottles and we filter sink water for them to refill their bottles. We are trying to reduce our plastic use at every cost.

Another thing we are doing is offering eco friendly/biodegradable plates and cutlery during our lunch time. By doing those swaps, we are reducing somehow our carbon footprint and also, making other conscious of small changes they can make.

What small changes are you making to make Earth better! Let us know in the comments.
