Tourism, community service, and care for Puerto Rico.

After Hurricane María, the team turned toward relief and recovery through Love in Motion. The work connected volunteers and communities, and grew to include trail stewardship and environmental projects.
A 2022 profile of Carmen Portela documented both Local Guest’s tourism work and the community work carried out through Love in Motion.

Local Guest was a women-powered travel company rooted in Puerto Rico, built around a belief that travel could create meaningful connections and support local communities.
Launched in 2017 by Carmen Portela and Mónica Pérez, the platform connected travelers with local hosts, entrepreneurs, and community organizations. The invitation was simple: experience Puerto Rico through the people who call it home.
From rural farms and rivers to artists’ studios and coastal communities, the aim was to share the island’s culture and natural beauty while creating opportunities for the people caring for them.
