What is sustainable tourism?

Tourism that respects both local people and the traveler, cultural heritage and the environment. It seeks to provide people with an exciting and educational experience that is also of benefit to the people of the host country.

What is a community-based experience?

A community-based experience is hosted by local residents, often from rural and economically marginalized regions, where they invite travelers to visit their communities and discover the rich culture and wildlife they have to offer. The community residents earn income as hosts and a part of the overall income is set aside for projects that will benefit the community as a whole.

How can I contact my host?

If transportation is not included, what options do I have to get to the experience?

We can help coordinate transportation. Please keep in mind there is a minimum requirement of participants to book transportation and it’s more cost-effective. Other options of transportation: Jaime, Metro Taxis, Major Cab Company, Uber or you can rent a car.

Should a purchase Travel Insurance?

Local Guest STRONGLY encourages the traveler to carry Travel Insurance for the tour. Local Guest warns the Client that insurance carriers require travelers to purchase policies within a limited period of time from payment of the first deposit. The traveler will be solely responsible for arranging travel insurance, and Local Guest will not be liable for any damages or deficiencies in the traveler’s travel insurance coverage. Our partners at World Nomads can help with your travel insurance here.

How far in advance should I book the experiences?

That depends on the type of experience and the host; each experience has a different timetable, but usually you should book with at least 3 to 5 days of anticipation. For group experiences that exceed the maximum number of participants, we ask for at least 15-30 days in advance.

What happens if I have an emergency and I can’t make it to the day of the experience? Do I get a refund?

CANCELLATIONS made by the client: The payment of the experience will not be refundable, unless the cancellation is made 72 hours or more prior to the date of the experience. The cancellation will be made by calling or emailing Local Guest. If the cancellation is made less than 72 hours, there will be no refund of money; however, you may change the date of the experience, subject to availability of days. If you do not show up or if you are late for the experience, there will be no refund or change of reservation.

How can we help on the island?

Some of our experiences include a volunteering aspect but as a Puerto Rican founded company, you can help by participating in any of our sustainable tourism experiences, thus contributing to the economic development of the island, to the generation of employment, the conservation of the environment and the empowerment of the communities.

Why the price? / Where does my money go?

The price of our experiences depends on many factors, for example, the host/organization offering the experience, whether there is a certified tour guide, an artist or a non-profit organization, certified PRTC transportation, materials or equipment necessary, lunch from a local business or resident from the community, logistics and coordination for the experiences. In general, 80% of the price is directly invested in the community/host and 20% goes to our Local Guest group coordinator.
